Discipline
A timely reminder of the
importance of Church discipline can be found by listening to the recent 9Marks conference held at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The speakers were not all Baptists: Danny
Akin, Mark Dever, Garrett Kell, Thabiti Anyabwile, Mez McConnell (from
Edinburgh) and Ligon Duncan all spoke. Dr Duncan of Reformed Theological
Seminary brought the conference to a conclusion by highlighting how church
discipline brings congregational unity.
Presbyterians in Scotland are all
at sea when it comes to the biblical basis and value of church discipline, some
belonging to bodies that have long since ceased to discipline those who teach
false doctrine or engage in sexual immorality.
These addresses show how important church discipline, faithfully and
lovingly applied, is to the well being of the Church. Indeed, it is one of the essential marks of
the true church.
